Photos from Strictly Air Cooled's post TOP TIPS !
Well sadly the diagnosis of this lovely bugs misfire is broken piston rings on number three. This is the most common cylinder too overheat. The cause of this is incorrect ignition timing running lean on the fuel mixture or too heavy on your right foot. This is why you should always keep your Vw tuned correctly and regular services. By the book you need to carry out a full service of your air cooled Vw every 3000 miles. Or once a year. If you store your Vw lots they suffer from washing the bores. In long term storage fuel can run through the carburettor through the inlet manifold and into the cylinders. Being a flat engine this runs through the bores and fills your sump with fuel. Diluting the engine oil. The tale tale sign of this is after storage check your oil before start up. If it’s over full and wasn’t when you put it away smell the dipstick it will have a distinct smell of petrol. This is why I recommend annual services or every 3000 miles.
This is why the myth of Vw are unreliable heaps evolved. It makes me chuckle when I hear non Vw lovers say” poxy vws they blow up all the time” NO they don’t if you maintain and service by the book. You will then own the most reliable vehicle on the road.
Hope this helps everyone ?
